Amir Khan v Lamont Petersen -- Referee Joe Cooper's controversial decisions cost Khan pair of junior welterweight titles

WASHINGTON (Dec. 11) – Amir Khan shocked by the loss to Lamont Petersen due to a split decision on Saturday night at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in the presence of a wild, near-sellout crowd of 8,647.

Amir Khan's upset defeat by the hands of Joe Cooper rather than Lamont Petersen
Petersen won the bout to lift a pair of junior welterweight titles in a major upset courtesy to the controversial decision by referee Joe Cooper. Cooper deducted a point from Khan in the 7th round for pushing Petersen and then again in 12th round he removed another in the 12th round for a disputed punch on the break.

Khan had traveled all the way from England to Peterson's hometown and will certainly be sorry now after the controversial treatment in the ring by Cooper.

Judges Valerie Dorsett and George Hill each had it 113-112 for Peterson, and Nelson Vazquez had it 115-110 for Khan. ESPN.com had it 114-111 for Khan, as did HBO's unofficial scorer Harold Lederman, who had it 113-112.

Amir Khan has already challenged the outcome and demanded a rematch on a neutral venue.

Another Bhiwani Star - Vikas Krishan Yadav : Became the Youngest Boxer Ever To Win a Gold Medal in Asian Games at The Age of Just 18

He made it possible before his ideal. Yes, I’m talking about the India’s new sporting hero, Vikas Krishan Yadav, who became the youngest boxer to won an Asian Games boxing gold ever. He won gold medal on Thursday a day before his role model Vijender Singh bagged his Gold for India.

Like many shining sports star in Bhiwani, Vikas Krishan Yadav, 18, has been eagerly following the destiny of Olympic winner Vijender Singh. In his hometown Bhiwani, India's boxing nursery, not many were surprised. It was another day at office for its boxers, who've won four out of seven medals won by India at the Asian Games.

A bizarre stomach bug almost dashed the teenage champion's medal hopes. On the eve of his bout, Vikas had to keep visiting the loo till late at night. His father blames it on laddoos. "His mom packed laddoos made in desi ghee for him. He had one too many and followed it with some mutton. Still, he did not let his condition deter him and focused on outwitting his Chinese opponent. Perhaps, the affection in his mother's laddoos helped him emerge a winner," says Yadav.

When he returns home next week, Yadav, an employee with the Haryana electricity department, plans to do his bit to pamper his son. "I'll buy him a car. He has been asking for a mobike but I thought it was too dangerous. Now that he is 18, I'll let him choose the make and I will pay for it."

Apart from pestering him for a bike, Vikas hasn't made too many demands from his father. Till his boxing commitments became a priority, Vikas, like his younger sister Kiran, studying Sciences in class 11, was a good student. But once he joined the Bhiwani Boxing Club (BBC), he could not attend regular school. So, Vikas took his class 12 exams through Open School and is pursuing a graduation through correspondence.

What makes Vikas stand out from other pugilists gunning for boxing glory at coach Jagdish Singh's academy is his intelligence. In a way, he is Bhiwani's first cerebral boxer. "He is good at  football and carrom, too, but takes keener interest in chess. In fact, the intelligence he gained from chess helped him out-think his opponents in China," says his father.

Perhaps, it was this habit of breaking stereotypes that made Vikas drop a career in the army to pursue boxing.

With view to tap mass-market sports segment, the Italian luxury house, Dolce & Gabbana, have signed a sponsorship with a boxing team. The trend of luxury brands partnering with sports was also evidenced in the Puma acquisition by PPR. This was in line with their strategy to increase their footage in lifestyle and outdoor sector through a new sports division. Dolce & Gabbana took this step to nullify effects of financial crisis which was evidenced in their low figures of sales as against previous years. Amir Khan Outclassed Paulie Malignaggi to Defend World Title in Style

NEW YORK: After all the controversies regarding his work permit for USA, Pakistani origin British boxer Amir Khan made an impressive and delightful debut in the US as he defended his World Champion title successfully by beating fragile Paulie Malignaggi after 11 one-sided rounds.

Amir was on top of his game right from the opening bell and never allowed his opponent to dictate terms. Malignaggi resistence came to end in the 11th round by referee as he declared Amir Khan as the winner of WBA Super Lighweight World Championship.

It wasn't enough for Freddie Roach that Amir Khan beat, batter and unequivocally outbox Paulie Malignaggi at Madison Square Garden last Saturday night. Roach wanted more. So when Khan settled onto his stool after the 10th round, comfortably ahead on the judge's scorecards, Roach delivered a message to his young pupil.

Bernard Hopkins Avenged a 17-year-old Defeat by Roy Jones Jr And Ready to Face WBA Heavyweight Champion David Haye

Former middleweight champion Hopkins, 45, beat Jones by unanimous decision in an ill-tempered Las Vegas bout.

The non-title fight erupted into life in the sixth round after Hopkins took a blow to the back of the head.

Afterwards, he said: "People will think the punch in the back of my head made me a little crazy, but I want Haye."

When the pair met in 1993 Jones won on points and the cagey start to the belated rematch suggested the full 12 rounds would be needed once more.

Indeed, the action was in stark contrast to the display put on just hours earlier in Manchester as Haye dropped John Ruiz twice in the first round and twice more later on to stop the durable American for only the second time in 55 fights.

However, as the Las Vegas contest reached its mid point, the contest finally sparked into life as Jones spun out of a clinch and landed a short punch to the back of Hopkins' head.

Hopkins dropped to his knees for several minutes but when the round resumed, he attacked Jones with a furious flurry and the two men continued to exchange punches as the bell rang, with security official having to enter the ring to restore order.

Hopkins went down on two other occasions, albeit from another rabbit punch and a low blow, while an accidental head butt in the eleventh round opened a gash on Jones' left eyelid.

"It was kind of rough," said Hopkins, who improved his record to 51-5-1. "Roy's a veteran. He was tying me up. I was tying him up. It was a good fight."

Former super-middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight title holder Jones, who slipped to 54-7 with his sixth defeat in 11 fights, admitted he may now chose to call time on a glorious career.

"I'll go back and talk to my coaches and my dad and if we think I still have it, we'll keep going, and if not, we'll call it a day," he said.
