ICC T20 World Cup 2010 - - New Zealand Vs. Zimbabwe: Kiwi's Through to Super-Eight Stage After Thrashing Zimbabwe by 7 Runs in a Rain Effected Match

Nathan McCullum picked up his second consecutive man-of-the-match award as New Zealand strolled into the Super Eights stage of cricket's World Twenty20 Cup this morning.

McCullum, man-of-the-match in the first round victory over Sri Lanka at the weekend, backed that up with three wickets in an over against Zimbabwe today as New Zealand won the rain-affected match in Guyana by seven runs.

New Zealand's first match of the Super Eights will be against South Africa or India in Barbados on Friday at 5am (NZ time), followed by Pakistan, also in Barbados, at 1.30am Sunday (NZ time) and then England in St Lucia at 5.30am Tuesday (NZ time).

Zimbabwe were rolled for just 84 - the 12th-lowest total in Twenty20 international history - in 15.1 overs and New Zealand replied with 36 for one in 8.1 overs when the rain arrived to washout the remainder of the match, giving the Black Caps victory under the Duckworth-Lewis system.

Zimbabwe, who were eliminated from the tournament, made a bright start to be 58 for one in the seventh over before opener Hamilton Masakadza was run out for 20 courtesy of sharp work in the deep from Jacob Oram, sparking a collapse.

McCullum, who had opened the bowling, claimed three key scalps in one over - the ninth - with his off spin.

He had the dangerous Elton Chigumbura caught at long-on for three off the first ball. Charles Coventry was out for nought after offering a simple caught and bowled chance and off the over's last ball Craig Ervine (one) was stumped by wicketkeeper Gareth Hopkins.

Medium pacer Scott Styris then chimed in with three for five in two overs to effectively seal the result.

"We fought back well in the middle stages with Nathan and Scott Styris," said captain Daniel Vettori, who won the toss and took two for 10 himself.

"We knew it would be a difficult track to bat with Zimbabwe having so many spinners and we did well to come back in the middle overs."

Opener Tatenda Taibu top-scored with 21, a score that was pipped by New Zealand counterpart Brendon McCullum's unbeaten 22 off 26 balls, which included two fours. In the process, McCullum became the first player to bring up 1000 Twenty20 international runs.

Jesse Ryder fell for two and Martin Guptill was on six when the rain arrived.

Zimbabwe came into the tournament as one of the form teams after shocking Pakistan and Australia in the warm-ups but they struggled against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.

"It is disappointing," said captain Prosper Utseya.

"We had a good start but we didn't play well in the middle. There is potential no doubt. But some guys have to mature as cricketers."

New Zealand qualify top from group B. After playing the West Indies, their other likely Super Eight opponents next week ahead of the semifinals are Pakistan and South Africa, depending on the outcome of pool matches.

All the Super Eight games are in Barbados and Nathan McCullum expected a change in approach would be needed.

ICC U-19 World Cup - - Tom Triffitt Shines With Brilliant Half-century as Australia Overpowered Sri Lanka to Reach 3rd Final

A brilliant half-century by former Launceston cricketer Tom Triffitt helped Australia through to an ICC U-19 World Cup final berth.

Australia defeated Sri Lanka by two wickets in Tuesday's semi-final, played at Lincoln in New Zealand.

The Tasmanian wicketkeeper and middle-order batsman hit 50 off 59 balls batting at No.7 to help steer the Australians to a winning total of 8-206 chasing Sri Lanka's 205.

Earlier, the Australian attack had Sri Lanka in deep trouble after it won the toss and batted, when it slumped to 5-32, as Australia's bowlers Alister McDermott and Josh Hazlewood ripped through the top order.

But valuable lower-order partnerships helped Sri Lanka to a final total of 205, off 48.2 overs.

Australia was also in early trouble in its run chase crashing to 3-38 and later 5-93, before Australian captain Mitchell Marsh and Triffitt put on a match-saving 78-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

Marsh was the seventh batsman dismissed with the total on 171, just three runs short of what would have been a memorable century.

His innings of 97, off 110 balls was a match-winning performance and earned him the man-of-the-match award.

From 7-171, Triffitt then stepped up and held the run chase together for a valuable half-century before being dismissed with Australia just four runs short of its tally.

Australia will meet Pakistan in Saturday's final after Pakistan (6-213) beat the West Indies (8-212) in the other semi-final.

Pakistan is unbeaten at the 16-nation tournament, while Australia has lost once, to South Africa, in preliminary rounds.

ICC U-19 World Cup - - Defending Champion India Thrashed Out By The Arch-Rivals Pakistan in Rain-Effected Quarter Final

WELLINGTON, Jan 23, 2010 - Pakistan knocked defending champions India out of the ICC Under 19 World Cup Saturday in a tense rain-affected quarter-final at Lincoln.

In the other last-eight tie played Saturday, the West Indies beat England by 18 runs in a match shortened to 36 overs a side by bad weather.

India could only manage 114-9 in their 23 overs but Pakistan had to battle to reach the modest total, getting to their target with only three balls remaining and two wickets in hand.

Mandeep Singh top-scored for India with 40, after the 2008 champions lost two wickets in the first over. The main bowlers to cause the damage for Pakistan were Fayyaz Butt with 4-27, and Raza Hassan, who took three wickets.

Pakistan's chase started badly. They lost their first three wickets for just 17 runs in the first seven overs but a partnership of 55 between Ahsan Ali and Rameez Aziz brought them back into the reckoning.

Wickets fell regularly until Hammad Azam steered Pakistan home, scoring an unbeaten 21 from 13 balls.

In the other quarter-final, the West Indies scored 166 before dismissing England for 148.

The West Indies' victory was built on a 103-run third-wicket partnership between Kraigg Braithwaite (69) and Andre Cleary (52), as well as a devastating spell of bowling by paceman Jason Holder, who took 5-19.

Pakistan will meet the West Indies in the first semi-final on Monday. New Zealand will play Australia and South Africa meet Sri Lanka in the remaining quarter-finals on Sunday.

ICC U-19 World Cup Highlights - - New Zealand Also Made Room for Quarter Finals

LINCOLN (New Zealand): Home team New Zealand secured a quarter-final spot in the ICC Under-19 World Cup here on Tuesday with an easy seven wicket win over Zimbabwe.

They will join defending champions India, England, Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka, who have clinched places in the quarter-finals to be played over the weekend.

In Group D, Bangladesh, Pakistan and the West Indies are vying for the two remaining qualifying spots.

New Zealand needed to chase down just 136 to win in 25 overs on Tuesday, after running through the Zimbabwe batting line-up in 42.2 overs in their Group ‘C’ match at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

New Zealand opener Tom Latham hit an unbeaten 57 to lead his country home.

ICC U-19 World Cup - - Pakistan Through to Quarter Finals After a Last Over Victory Over Bangladesh

PALMERSTON NORTH: The successful journey of Pakistan under 19 cricket team – the defending champions – is magnificently continued as green shirts have trounced Bangladesh under 19 by four wickets in a close contest here at Palmerston North on Wednesday, Geo news reported.

Pakistan are now through to Under-19 World Cup Quarter Finals.

Bangladesh winning the toss batted first and managed to put on a fighting 250-run target thanks to double fifties by Mehmood-ul-Hassan and Aman-ul-Haq in allotted 50 overs.

In reply, Pakistani openers showed good character contributing 104-run opening stand but no other player could prove formidable for opponents following opening partnership but however, later in the innings, Muhammad Waqas struck 20 runs off last 4 balls taking Pakistan home in 49.5 overs.

Two half centuries from Babar Azam and Ahmed Shahzad who knocked 91 and 52 respectively made major contributions in Pakistan innings.

ICC U-19 World Cup - - Easy Victory By Nine Wickets For England Against Afghanistan

England coasted to an easy nine wicket victory against Afghanistan in their ICC U19 World Cup clash on Monday.

Electing to field, England were on the ball all through, with Nathan Buck working wonders with the new ball. The seamer finished with three for 18 and was the key to reducing Afghanistan to 51 for four inside 20 overs.

It was left to Hashmat Shaidi, whose gutsy 41 off 58 balls helped steady the slide. There was another collapse once Shaidi was trapped in front of the wickets by Azeem Rafiq.

Khushal Rasooli chipped in with a solid 29 as Afghanistan saw their tally gain some kind of respectability.

Danny Briggs was the pick of the English bowlers, finishing with three for 15 off 10 overs.

For England, it was the usual suspects who saw the team through to a convincing win at the QEII Park in Christchurch.

Openers Chris Dent and Joe Root raced past 50 in quick time before the latter was sent packing in the 13th over by Ayub Khan.

Dent went on to record his second successive fifty of the tournament while James Vince once again contributed substantially (47 NO) as England reached home with half the innings to spare.

ICC U-19 World Cup - - USA Gone Thorugh Second Consecutive Defeat in The Hands of South Africa

The USA continued to feel the heat in the ICC U19 World Cup, going down to South Africa by eight wickets.

The Americans, who were blown away by Australia in their opener, were brushed away by the Proteas in less than two days’ time.

Put into bat, USA never found the going easy with Graham Hume spewing fire in his opening spell.

Gregory Sewdial wanted to make some difference in the American total and dug deep to muster 41 and with Azurdeen Mohammed (19) and wicketkeeper batsman Saami Siddiqui (19 NO) saw the team to some semblance of respectability.

Dale Deeb was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa, snapping up three for 23 in his 10 overs as USA managed 163 in 49.5 overs

The Proteas in reply, cruised along to an eight wicket win with 14.5 overs to spare.

Opener Dominic Hendricks and Colin Ackermann cracked fluent half centuries despite USA’s valiant efforts with the ball, during which they prized out Josh Richards and Stephan Smith, reducing the South Africans to 38 for two at one point.

ICC U-19 World Cup - - West Indies Revived Their Hopes For The Title After Nail-Biting Win Against Bangladesh

West Indies Under-19s revived their title hopes with a thrilling one-run victory over Bangladesh in a nail-biting ICC Under-19 World Cup Group D match yesterday.

Electing to bat in the crucial fixture at Fitzherbert Park, West Indies U19s posted 249 for eight off their 50 overs and Bangladesh replied with 248 all out in 49.4 overs.

Bangladesh were on the verge of victory- needing two runs from three balls - but Shaker Ahmed was run out by wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich to spark wild celebrations in the West Indies camp.

Yannic Cariah emerged with the man of the match award with two wickets after a solid knock of 44 for the Caribbean side’s victory, a result they badly needed after losing their opening match to Pakistan on Friday.

Uncharacteristically, the West Indies top order failed and they were in strife at 20 for three in the sixth over after prolific batsmen Kraigg Brathwaite (7), Trevon Griffith (0) and Evin Lewis (5) all fell cheaply.

Cariah and his captain Andre Creary fully repaired the early damage by posting a splendid 120-run fourth wicket stand at 5.21 runs per over.

Creary stroked a top-score of 55 off 83 balls with seven boundaries and Cariah compiled his 44 off 76 balls with three boundaries.

The pair fell in quick succession as the young Windies dipped from 140 for three to 140 for five but robust late-order knocks from Dowrich, Jermaine Blackwood and Akeem Dewar boosted the total toward the 250-mark.

Dowrich scored 35 off 42 balls with two boundaries and hard-hitting Blackwood thumped a thunderous 48 off 28 balls with two fours and four sixes.

Blackwood, batting at No.8, and Dewar (39) gathered a rapid 70 runs-at approximately nine per over--for the seventh wicket that propelled West Indies U19s to their match-winning total.

Opening bowlers Shaker Ahmed (2-39) and Abul Hasan Raju (2-55) were Bangladesh’s chief wicket-takers.

Bangladesh were clearly off the required pace before a rousing middle-order revival threatened the West Indies’ bid for victory.

Spinners Dewar and Jomel Warrican combined to topple the top order but the Asian side rallied from 87 for four in the 23rd over and used half-centuries from Tasamal Haque (54) and Shabbir Rahman (53) to force their way back into the game.

Rahman smashed six boundaries in his run-a-ball half-century and Haque compiled his 54 off 57 balls with three boundaries in a 73-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

Captain Mahmudul Hasan was Bangladesh’s next highest scorer with 32.

Left-arm spinner Warrican was the most economical bowler at 4.00 with figures of two for 36 off nine overs, while Dewar claimed three for 63 off ten overs.

Cariah broke Bangladesh’s momentum when he dislodged the dangerous Rahman en route to tidy figures of two for 38 off nine overs.

The odds favoured a Bangladesh victory in the last over when they needed just two runs from four balls with two wickets standing but West Indies snatched the stirring victory when tall pacer Jason Holder (1-38) bowled Haque and Ahmed, trying to sneak a bye, was run out next ball without scoring.

The result was a second dramatic last-over win for West Indies here inside a week.

In a warm-up match against Ireland on Tuesday, the young Windies incredibly claimed five wickets for four runs and snatched a four-run victory over the Irish with three balls to spare.

Despite the loss, Bangladesh stay top of Group D on net run-rate having won their opening match handsomely against Papua New Guinea (PNG).

Bangladesh, at +1.112, lead Pakistan (+0.800) and West Indies (-0.390) although all three teams have two points.

In the remaining Group D matches, Pakistan play PNG today, West Indies face PNG tomorrow and Pakistan tackle Bangladesh on Wednesday.

The two top teams from each of the four groups will move on to the Championship quarter-final phase and the bottom two will play in the Plate event.

In other matches yesterday, former champions Australia stayed top of Group B when they crushed Ireland by 209 runs, Sri Lanka opened their Group C campaign with an eight-wicket victory over Zimbabwe, and title-holders India cruised to a nine-wicket victory over Hong Kong in Group A.

ICC U-19 World Cup - - New Zealand's Convincing Victory by 9 Wickets in Their Opener Against Canada

The New Zealand Under-19 cricket team has cruised to an opening World Cup win over Canada in Christchurch.

The New Zealand captain Craig Cachopa (car-chopper) won the toss and decided to field first and they dismissed Canada for 128 in the 30th over with Doug Bracewell and Logan ven Beek taking 3 wickets each.

Chasing Canada's meagre total of 128 all out, New Zealand reached the target in just the 20th over for the loss of one wicket.

James Neesham top-scored with 47, while Doug Bracewell and Logan van Beek each took three wickets.

ICC U19 World Cup - - James Vince and Joe Root Shine With The Bat; As England Thrashed Hong Kong in Their Opener

England eased to a nine-wicket victory against Hong Kong in their ICC U19 World Cup opener on Saturday.

James Vince and Joe Root made short work of Hong Kong’s 185 all out, racing away to the target for the loss of just opener Christ Dent and with 19.5 overs to spare.

Earlier, England skipper Azeem Rafiq won the toss and put Hong Kong in to bat. The difference between the two sides was soon apparent as Nathan Buck set to work, removing openers Shakeel Haq and Alex Smith, with the scoreboard reading an appalling 25 for two.

It took a sizzling 69 ball 65 from Nizakat Khan and Irfan Ahmed’s fluent 32 to bail the Asian side out of early trouble. The duo 67 runs for the fourth wicket before Ahmed was trapped in front of the wickets by Rafiq.

David Payne was the pick of the bowlers for England, picking up three for 24 from nine overs.

England got off to a flyer in their chase before Dent was done in by Niaz Ali in the 10th over. It was then all up to Man of the Match Vince, who entertained the gathering at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln with ten exquisitely timed hits to the fence and a sweetly timed six.

ICC U19 World Cup - - Australia Cruised into Giant Victory by 108 Runs Over United States of America

Australia Under-19 has started their World Cup campaign in fine fashion with a 108-run with over the United States of America at Queenstown Cricket Ground in New Zealand today.

Australia Under-19 captain Mitch Marsh won the toss and elected to bat on a flat wicket and under clear blue skies with Australia going on to amass 263 in 49.2 overs.

As good as the batting was at times, it was the early work of the Australian quicks who ran through the USA top and middle order before some late resistance helped the minnows post a respectable 154 in 41.2 overs.

Marsh said it was nice to come away with a solid win, but said there were still plenty of areas his team could improve ahead of tomorrow's clash with Ireland. "It was obviously good to get a win first up. Wins are habits so we're going to go into next game with some good confidence," the 18-year-old said.

"I think we've still got a bit of work to do if we want to beat the better sides but to start with a good win today was great. We can make a bit of improvement in our middle overs with both bat and ball; I think we've got a few areas we can improve but we'll be right for next game."

Opener Tom Beaton got the innings off to a flying start as Australia moved to 1-107 at drinks, with Beaton finishing as Australia's top scorer with 73 from 76 deliveries, and the Man of the Match award. Beaton's partner at the top of the order was Nic Maddinson who looked in sparkling touch early, racing to 32 from just 37 deliveries before being stumped as the pair put on 81 for the opening stand.

Post-match, Marsh highlighted just how important it is in limited overs matches to get off to a solid start and was pleased that both openers were working well together.

"In one-day cricket it's important to get off to a good start, with both bat and ball, and I think we did that today," Marsh said. "They've formed a great relationship not only as friends but as an opening partnership now and if they can continue doing that for us at the top of the order it's fantastic."

All-rounder Tim Armstrong made an important contribution during Australia's middle overs, making 39 as he guided the side to a large total with some help from the lower order.

Australia's big quicks then fired early, making light work of the USA top order and Marsh is hoping Alister McDermott (4-29) and Josh Hazlewood (3-46) can carry their good form into tomorrow's match.

"They were ready and raring to go. It's been a pretty long build up to this match and it was great for Macca (Alister McDermott) and Joshy (Josh Hazlewood) to get a few early and hopefully they can continue that," Marsh said.

McDermott was deadly early, steaming into the breeze and hitting great lines and lengths, snaring the first three wickets, before Hazlewood joined the action. The lanky New South Welshman grabbed two in a row to be on a hat-trick and left USA reeling at 5-25.

Hazlewood missed the hat-trick but snared his third wicket only a few balls later, with McDermott snaring his fourth the next over as USA slumped to 7-28.

However, a lower-order revival helped USA to 154, as number six Azurdeen Mohammad (70) and number eight Asad Ghous (30) combined to put on a 68-run partnership.

Mohammad then combined with number 10, Hammad Shahid (nine not out) to put on 58 for the for the 9th wicket to frustrate the Australians even further as the US hung on for 41.2 overs.

Leggie Adam Zampa did the damage against the lower order as the 17-year-old from New South Wales snared 3-21 from 8.2 overs.

Australia's next match is against Ireland tomorrow, before the final pool match against South Africa on Wednesday.

ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup - - Pkistan Beat West Indies By 40 Runs in Its Opening Match

WELLINGTON: Pakistan defeated West Indies by 40 runs in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup here at Palmerston North.

Babar Azam followed a century with two wickets from his right-arm spin to inspire a 40-run win for Pakistan over West Indies.

Azam continued his pre-tournament form with 129 from 132 balls while opening the batting after West Indies chose to field, and his century formed the crux of Pakistan's 297 for seven.

West Indies were given a very good start to their chase, with the openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Trevon Griffith posting a century stand, but Azam's twin strikes derailed them.



Griffith, having smashed his way to a stunning 84 from 55 deliveries, was bowled by Usman Qadir, son of former Pakistan great Abdul Qadir.

Azam then eliminated Evin Lewis and captain Andre Creary for ducks. West Indies folded to 257 in 46.5 overs with Brathwaite unbeaten on 92.

In another match played at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Christchurch, defending champions India strolled to an eight-wicket win over Afghanistan.

Bangladesh Under-19 Cricket Team Ready to Take The Challenges in The ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup

Bangladesh Under-19 team will leave here for New Zealand today (Thursday) to participate in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup with a hope to reach the semifinal.


Bangladesh captain Mahmudul Hasan, who have been showing consistence in his performance recently, said: "Our target is to reach the last four (of the U-19 World Cup) and we have the ability to do it."

Addressing a pre-departure press conference at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium this (Wednesday) afternoon, he said they have taken good preparations ahead of the meet. "We will try our best to perform well."

Expressing some concern about their bowling department especially in pace bowling, the Bangladesh skipper, however, said they have a strong fielding side

Head Coach of Bangladesh team and former national skipper Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Bangladesh Team Manager Tanjeeb Ahsan Saad also spoke on the occasion.

Nannu said the boys have been practicing well ahead of the World Cup. They gained experience through domestic league and played some practice matches to prepare for the World Cup.

"We started our (World Cup) mission last April and have played a good number of home and away matches against England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe."

He added: It's true we have not played in New Zealand conditions before but the trip to England last year should certainly help us in coping with NZ conditions.

Replying to a question, the Head Coach said the team has been formed the World Cup based on individual performance. The boys are also mentally fit and ready to give their best.

"We've three players who I believe would do well at any level. Opening batsman Anamul Haque has been a brilliant find. He is very positive and fearless. Skipper Mahmudul Hasan has been our most consistent performer with both bat and ball while Shabbir Rahman is an exciting leg-break bowler who also has tremendous ability with the bat."

Nannu said he was also excited with the fact that "we are taking two specialist leg spinners (Shabbir and Nur Hossain) to New Zealand."

Bangladesh has been placed in Group D of the Youth World Cup with Pakistan, West Indies and Papua New Guinea.

Bangladesh will play their first match against Papua New Guinea on January 16 at the Fitzherbert Park in Palmerston North, play their 2nd match against West Indies on Jan 17 and the third match against Pakistan on Jan 20 at the same venue.

Bangladesh will also play two official practice matches in New Zealand ahead of the meet.
