China's Li Na Becomes First Chinese Player to Win Tennis Grand Slam Title
PARIS – China’s tennis star Li Na crushed defending champion Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 7-6 in the French Open women’s single final to become the first Chinese player to win a Grand Slam singles title.

By winning the Roland Garros title, Li Na is expected to rise to World No.4 on the WTA rankings (as of Monday, June 6, 2011), setting a national record for China and equalling the highest-ever ranking by a woman from Asia (previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm).

"I was nervous but I didn't want to show to my opponent," said Li, who appeared to be letting the match slip away in the second set. "I was a little bit shaking."

The crowd at Roland Garros was dotted with red Chinese flags and a small vocal group supporting Schiavone. They watched as Li dropped her serve for the only time late in the second set, but then won the final nine points of the match to earn her first major title.

French Open 2011 (Women's Singles) - China's Li Na Scolded Maria Sharapova to Reach Final

Li Na Reaches Final of French Open 2011 Beating Sharapova
PARIS, France (June 02) - China’s top seed Li Na beat Maria Sharapova 6-4, 7-5 in the first semi-final of French Open 2011 (women’s singles) at Roland Garros on today (Thursday/June 02).

The world’s sixth-seeded Li Na, who became the first Chinese player to reach a major final at the Australian Open this year, overcame Maria Sharapova to reach the French Open 2011 final and take a step closer to becoming the first Asian to win a grand slam singles title.

In the first set, Li raced into a 3-0 lead and broke three times as Sharapova, who took two games off the Chinese player's serve, struggled for rhythm in the wind and on the clay.

An awful double fault from Li early in the second set let the Russian back in but the three-times grand slam champion wasted the advantage when she committed the same error for 4-4.

Li, who lost to Kim Clijsters in January's Australian Open final, sealed victory and a meeting with the holder Francesca Schiavone or Marion Bartoli when her opponent double-faulted again, to the delight of millions of Chinese watching at home and a smattering on court.

Australian Open 2011: China's Li Na Becomes The First Asian Woman to Reach Any Grand Slam Final

Melbourne, Australia - Chinese tennis star, Li Na created history by becoming the first Asian woman to reach any Grand Slam final. Li Na defies the world number one Caroline Wozniacki 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the Australian Open semis on Thursday. After losing first set quite easily Li Na came into the match in the real sense when she saved a match point in the second set and shattered Wozniacki's dreams of winning a maiden major title.

The 20-year-old Wozniacki had gone into the tournament having to fend off accusations that she wasn't a deserving world number one because she is yet to win a Grand Slam.

For the first set-and-a-half, as she systematically picked apart Li's game and broke down the Chinese player's fierce forehand, Wozniacki looked every bit the world's best player

But just when Li looked down and out, she cut down her error rate and began to find her range with her groundstrokes, scrapping her way back into the match.

The 28-year-old from Wuhan overwhelmed a tiring Wozniacki in the third set to set up a final against either Kim Clijsters or Vera Zvonareva.

Asian Cup Qatar - - -Vadim Abramov Praises His Boys After Qualifying for Quarter -Finals as a Result of Thrilling Draw Against China

Vadim Abramov
Uzbekistan manager Vadim Abramov thanked his players after they qualified on top of Group A in the Asian Cup on Sunday.

A thrilling 2-2 draw with China ensured the Uzbeks would finish with seven points from their three group games, booking them a place in the quarter-finals of Asia's premier soccer competition.

Uzbekistan impressively fought back from 1-0 down to lead 2-1 but were denied a third victory in succession when Hao Junmin struck a sensational free-kick to ensure both sides would share the spoils.

"The first round has finished, we're top of the group, it was a great game and I think everybody is happy," Abramov said.

"I want to thank my players because they played very well in the group games. The result was satisfactory for us, which is why we played more defensively today."

Abramov rejected the suggestion from China assistant coach Fu Bo that Uzbekistan were lucky, instead pointing the finger at his side's failure to convert their many chances in front of goal.

"I don't think we were lucky," he said.

"We played very well and had many chances to score, for example when (Maksim) Shatskikh could not score in the opening minutes."

Abramov's side will face Japan, Jordan or Syria in the last eight but the boss is not concerned about any of his potential opponents.

"I don't care who we play in the next round. We don't choose any team because all the teams in the next round will be very strong," he said.

While Abramov believed his side deserved a draw, Fu did not agree, feeling his side had made claims for all three points.

"First of all I have to say today the match is a great match, on behalf of all the staff I want to say thanks to my players, they did very well today," Fu said.

"They tried their best but maybe just a few details and a bit of bad luck cost us the game today."

Fu also said the Asian Cup experience would prove invaluable ahead of their bid to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

"Since this team got together, we have been focusing on qualifying for the World Cup. Now we end our journey in the Asian Cup but we have played three different matches and have had three different results. They were very good practice for our young players," he said.

"I think our team did very well in this Asian Cup and got great experience but the result shows that we need to do a lot of work in the future."
