ICC U-19 World Cup Highlights - - New Zealand Also Made Room for Quarter Finals

LINCOLN (New Zealand): Home team New Zealand secured a quarter-final spot in the ICC Under-19 World Cup here on Tuesday with an easy seven wicket win over Zimbabwe.

They will join defending champions India, England, Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka, who have clinched places in the quarter-finals to be played over the weekend.

In Group D, Bangladesh, Pakistan and the West Indies are vying for the two remaining qualifying spots.

New Zealand needed to chase down just 136 to win in 25 overs on Tuesday, after running through the Zimbabwe batting line-up in 42.2 overs in their Group ‘C’ match at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

New Zealand opener Tom Latham hit an unbeaten 57 to lead his country home.

In Group ‘A’, Afghanistan posted their first win of the tournament, beating Hong Kong by eight wickets at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

At Queenstown Events Centre: Ireland beat USA by five wickets. USA 217 in 48.1 overs (Saqib Saleem 62, S.R. Taylor 57, R.G. Corns 31, G.R. Sewdial 30; L.T. Nelson 3-3, C.A. Young 3-50); IRELAND 218-5 in 43.5 overs (P.R. Stirling 114, G.F. McDonnell 35 not out; R.G. Corns 3-46).

At Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln: New Zealand beat Zimbabwe by seven wickets.

ZIMBABWE 135 in 42.2 overs (T.C. Mutombodzi 28; T.G. Johnston 3-37, B.M. Wheeler 2-10, B.J. Small 2-20, D.A.J. Bracewell 2-26); NEW ZEALAND 140-3 in 25.3 overs (H.K.P. Boam 58, T.W.M. Latham 57 not out; C.W. Price 2-33).

At Fitzherbert Park, Palmerston North: West Indies beat Papua New Guinea by five wickets.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 187 in 50 overs (S. Bau 50, J. Kila 30; Y. Cariah 4-37, Y. Ottley 2-14); WEST INDIES 188-5 in 35.4 overs (S.O. Dowrich 84 not out, K.C. Brathwaite 82; R.C. Haoda 3-37).

Wednesday’s fixtures: Australia v South Africa (Queenstown Events Centre); Bangladesh v Pakistan (Fitzherbert Park, Palmerston North); New Zealand v Sri Lanka (Village Green, Christchurch).
