IT'S been a long time coming, but finally Indians have something to cheer for at the Formula 1 races.
Force India has notched up good performances at the last two races - 2nd at the Belgian Grand Prix and a creditable 4th at the Italian Grand Prix - and are poised to keep up the momentum at this weekend's SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.
Part of the strategy involves a new front wing package as well as modifications to the car's body, like changes to the mirror mountings. The Force India website reveals that the cars will also sport bladed rear wheel spinners, front bargeboards and a diffuser and an updated engine cover.
Team owner Vijay Mallya, who has adopted a very hands-on approach of late, says he's looking forward to the team performing well in Singapore.
"It would be very nice to perform well in any race where there's a large Indian population. That would go for Abu Dhabi as well for sure, and definitely Singapore," he said on the team website.
"The feedback in India has been absolutely brilliant. There's been a lot of excitement, not just with the number of messages, but in the Indian media.
And of course the Force India website has been flooded with messages from all of our fans. It means a lot to them, and they're really proud now."
He is looking forward to a good performance by both Force India drivers, Adrian Sutil and Tonio Liuzzi, in the qualifying sessions and thereafter race for points on race day itself.
Sutil calls the Singapore track "quite challenging", a cross between the Valencia and Monaco circuits.
"I enjoy street racing and Singapore has that same feeling, so I'm looking forward to it," he wrote on the team website.
"Last year I didn't have such a great race but this year we are in a very different situation. My goal will be to be focused from the start of the weekend, do some solid work in practice and qualify well as a good grid position is very important here. For sure it's then to get some more points. I feel we can definitely add to the total."
