England 202 for 6 (Morgan 85*, Collingwood 57) beat South Africa 127 for 3 (Bosman 58) by one run (D/L method)

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — England won the first of two Twenty20 internationals against South Africa by one run on the Duckworth-Lewis method on Friday after rain ended play with the Proteas on 127-3.

England had made 202-6, before Loots Bosman and captain Graeme Smith gave the South Africans an excellent start with an opening stand of 97 in 8.3 overs. Bosman struck five fours and four sixes in a blazing 31-ball innings of 58, while Smith scored 41 off 23 balls before being the first man out.

Smith started slowly, but sped up with three fours and four sixes. He was out forcing seamer Luke Wright to the cover boundary where Eion Morgan took and easy catch.

Bosman followed five balls later, hitting off-spinner Graeme Swann high to mid-wicket to be caught by Paul Collingwood.

The third man out for the Proteas was JP Duminy, adjudged lbw to Saj Mahmood for six, as the home side lost three wickets in the space of 12 balls.

The not out batsmen for South Africa were AB de Villiers on 10 and Albie Morkel on nine.

Earlier, a 98-run fourth-wicket partnership between Morgan and his captain Collingwood had set England up for a challenging total.

Morgan hit 85 not out off 45 balls to record the highest score by an England batsman in a Twenty20 international. His score included seven fours and five sixes as he turned on the power late in the innings.

On a good batting strip, England added 83 runs in the last seven overs of their innings, and scored 53 in the last five overs.

Collingwood was dismissed in the 17th over when he hit Ryan McLaren straight to Johan Botha at long-off. His contribution was 57 off 32 balls, and he hit three fours and four sixes.

Starting with Collingwood, England lost three wickets for 10 runs in 13 balls up to the 19th over.

Morgan, however, smashed 29 runs off the last seven balls he faced at the death, including two fours and three sixes, to take the score beyond 200.

The other big scorer for England was Jonathan Trott, who hit 33 off 25 balls batting at No. 3. He was at the wicket early after Joe Denly had been trapped lbw by Charl Langeveldt off the first ball of the match. Trott hit five fours and was run out when going for a single and Graeme Smith got the ball in to Roelof van der Merwe who broke the wicket at the bowler's end.

The best of the South African bowlers was Ryan McLaren. Apart from Collingwood's wicket, he also trapped Alastair Cook lbw for 11 and had Matt Prior caught at point by Albie Morkel for a duck. McLaren's final figures were 3-33.
