Informal Award Ceremony At The National Tennis Centre in Roehampton Celebrated by British Tennis

British Tennis celebrated the year with an informal Awards Ceremony at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.

World number four Andy Murray scooped the AEGON Player of the Year Award after reaching number two in the world rankings and winning six ATP events over the past twelve months, whilst the US Open Girls winner, Heather Watson also struck gold taking the AEGON Junior Player of the Year Award following her performances and rise up the rankings.

The AEGON Coach of the Year Award was awarded to Barry Scollo from the University of Bath Tennis, an International High Performance Centre (IHPC). Scollo was nominated for his “contagious energy” for the sport and his dedication to his education as well as his attitude to being the best he can be.

The Highland Spring Hot Shots Tour Award which is awarded to an AEGON FutureStar who has demonstrated enthusiasm and dedication to the sport during a 2009 Highland Spring road show event went to Maia Lumsden, a talented 11 year old from Glasgow.

The British Tennis Young Volunteer of the Year Award went to Hugo Allen, an 18 year old who has successfully organised a number of competitions at his local club as well as encouraging many of his peers to volunteer in the sport.

Christine French, originally from Lancashire and now a player and coach in Surrey was the winner of the British Tennis Veteran of the Year Award. The reigning European Women’s 50 champion, Christine was a world championships semi-finalist in Majorca and a key member of the winning British team which won the Women’s 50 Maria Esther Bueno Cup in the ITF World Team Championships. She is currently ranked No 1 in the ITF world rankings.

The ABTO Official of the Year for 2009 was won by James Keothavong. An ITF Silver Badge Chair Umpire, James was the Chair Umpire for the Ladies Doubles Final at Wimbledon 2009, for two high profile matches at the US Open and was the only Silver Badge Chair Umpire to work a Davis Cup Quarter Final. Alongside his commitment to officiating, he also mentors other officials and is one of the Heads of the LTA / ABTO White Badge Chair Umpire Development Group and National Chair Umpire Development Group.

The British Tennis Club of the Year went to Boston Tennis Club in Lincolnshire for their continued work to improve and attract more people to the club. They have achieved ClubMark and are satellite-accredited. In addition they have an extensive schools programme and offer a great year-round tennis programme to all their members.

The British Tennis Team of the Year went to the new doubles pairing of Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski, now known as Flemski. The pair have risen up the rankings and have secured two ATP titles as well as beating the world number ones in doubles – the Bryan brothers – along the way at the AEGON Championships in June.

The final award of the day was the prestigious BNP Paribas Lifetime Achievement Award which went to Margaret Holder for her absolute dedication to tennis. Holder has been volunteering at Somerset Lawn Tennis Association for over 50 years, running junior competitions, training sessions, county training sessions, camps and adult competitions encouraging many youngsters and adults to get into the sport.

The Awards served to reward and recognise people who have made an outstanding contribution to British Tennis in 2009.
