Australian Open - - Novak Djokovic Progresses to Quarter Finals by An Easy Victory Over Lukasz Kubot

Novak Djokovic comfortably saw off Lukasz Kubot on Monday afternoon to progress to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic rolled to his second consecutive straightforward victory in Melbourne with a 6-1, 6-2, 7-5 win over world No. 87 Lukasz Kubot.

Djokovic lost just four games against Denis Istomin in the last round and he started this match in equally impressive style. The Serb played smart tennis in the first set, striking the ball with real confidence and moving his opponent around at will. He hit 14 winners and made just four unforced errors. Djokovic opened up a 3-1 lead when Kubot double-faulted on break point down and he went on to wrap up the set 6-1.

Melbourne's No. 3 seed continued to dominate in the second frame of play. He struck the perfect balance between defense and attack and punished Kubot whenever he ventured into the net. The 2008 Australian Open champion finished a cleverly worked rally with a forehand winner to break for a 3-2 advantage. After comfortably holding his next service game, he broke again when Kubot pushed a groundstroke long. Djokovic then held to love to claim the set 6-2.

Djokovic appeared to be easing to victory, but he seemed to lose focus during the third set. Kubot managed to save one break point at 2-2 with a big forehand down the line, but he then double-faulted to hand Djokovic the initiative. The Pole, though, put away a simple volley to break back immediately. Both players held their next two service games, but Kubot then chose another inopportune moment to double fault. That gave Djokovic the chance to serve for the match and he duly obliged, closing out the contest with a rasping forehand winner.

Djokovic will face the winner of the Jo-Wilfried Tsonga-Nicolas Almagro match for a place in the semifinals.
