Australian Open - - World No.1 Roger Federer Took Control of First Round Match After Losing First Set; Against Andreev From Russia

The world number one, and top seed at the 2010 Australian Open, Roger Federer, made it through to the second round of the tournament with a 4 set win over Igor Andreev. The last time Andreev played Federer, he stretched Federer to a 5 setter, which Federer eventually won. With Federer's dismal form in the last 3 months, all eyes were on this match to see if Igor Andreev could manage to dent Federer's record of making it to 22 consecutive Grand Slam semi-finals. Alas, though Andreev started well, Federer proved yet again why he is considered the best tennis player in the world, not only winning the match, but never giving the Russian a chance to win a single game in the fourth set.

Andreev got off to a good start, winning the first set, and putting pressure on the world number 1. However, Federer responded strongly and took the second set 6-4. The third set saw some great tennis from both players, and the set went into a tie-break, which Federer managed to win. After winning the 3rd set tie breaker, Federer never looked back, trashing the Russian 6-0 in the fourth set to take the match and advance into the second round.

In his four set victory over Andreev, FedEx fired 9 aces and had 39 winners. However, he also made an uncharacteristic 68 unforced errors and 3 double faults, indicating that he might need more practice if he is to overcome his potential quarterfinal opponent, Nikolay Davyedenko. In comparison, Andreev could not match up to the performance of the top seed, and with 55 unforced errors and 7 double faults, winning the match was always going to be a task for him.

This victory will bring relief to the millions of Federer fans, who will want him to make this years Australian Open his 16th Grand Slam title. However, things may not be as easy as they seem for Federer, who faces some tough competition in his half of the draw. Names like Nikolay Davyedenko, who has bested Federer in their last two meetings, and Novak Djokovic, the number 3 seed, stand in Federer's path to the final, where he will face, in all probability, his nemesis, Rafael Nadal.

For now though, the second round beckons where Federer will play the winner of Juan Ignacio Chela and Victor Hanescu.
