Elena Dementieva From Russia Thrashed Serena Williams in The Final of The Sydney International To Grab The Title

Russian Tennis Star Elena Dementieva showcased her Australian Open credentials with a tremendous Victory over Serena Williams in the final of the Sydney International on Friday night.

The Russian spectacularly reversed her straight-sets loss to Williams at the 2009 season-ending championships to romp to back-to-back titles in Sydney, hammering the world No.1 6-3 6-2 in 75 minutes.

The 28-year-old is the first woman to defend her crown in the Olympic city since Martina Hingis reigned supreme in 2001-02.

The 2004 French and US Open runner-up, the fifth-ranked Dementieva has long been rated the best player in the world without a major.

But boasting four semi-final appearances from the last six slams, the 28-year-old may finally be ready to break her well-documented drought at Melbourne Park.

Williams abruptly halted Dementieva's 15-match winning streak in last year's Open semi-finals before thrashing Dinara Safina in the title match.

But there was no stopping Dementieva on Friday night, the world No.5 mixing devastating attack with some remarkable defence to completely dominate the 11-times grand slam champion.

After breaking Williams five times during the one-sided final, Dementieva nailed a backhand return winner to put the American out of her misery.

Williams' own Open hopes look less promising, with the top seed finishing the match with an apparent knee injury.
