Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010 - - Charles Hamelin: One of Three Canadians to Make History for Canada

Charles Hamelin is one of three Canadians with the chance to make history on Saturday.

The short-track speedskater hits the Pacific Coliseum oval in the 1,500-metre race, joining alpine skier Manuel Osborne-Paradis and mogul skier Jennifer Heil in their quest to win Canada's first Olympic gold medal on home soil.

"For sure, if it happens, it will be the greatest moment of my life and will be a great moment for Canada," Hamelin told reporters about the chance to make history.

Hamelin, 25, of Saint-Julie, Que., was so dominant in 2009 he earned his Olympic berth last March. He finished second at last year's world championships in the 1,500 metres and is considered a favourite to reach to the podium on Saturday.

It was a distinction he narrowly missed at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy, where he finished fourth in the 1,500 metres. He was, however, a member of the silver medal-winning 5,000-metre relay team.

This time, three South Koreans and Apolo Ohno stand in Hamelin's way.

Ohno is looking to become the most decorated Olympic short-track skater in history. The 27-year-old, soul-patch-wearing superstar has two gold, one silver and two bronze medals on his Olympic resume.

He is tied with five other speedskaters for the most Olympic medals, but they are all retired.
