Kim Clijsters' French Open Hopes Tumbled With Her Ankle Injury

Kim Clijsters seems to be having serious fitness issues as her presence at this year’s French Open is unlikely to happen. The experienced Belgian injured her right ankle at her cousin’s wedding.

A statement posted on her website on Sunday said that the injury would keep her from playing on the tour for at least four to six weeks.

The statement did not give details on how the injury occurred, but said that Clijsters, the two time Grand Slam winner had strained ligaments in her right ankle and tore an ankle joint capsule and tendon sheath with serious consequences.

This will be the second injury setback for Clijsters. Last week, the world number two announced that she’d be sidelined for a month with shoulder and wrist injuries which would keep her out of Belgium’s Fed Cup semifinal against the Czech Republic this weekend.

The winner of US Open and the Australian Open said she had overexerted her right shoulder and wrist during her busy spring schedule on the tour. After her Grand Slam win, she continued to play at the Fed Cup and a tournament in Paris in February before participating at Indian Wells and Miami.

She pulled out of her fourth-round match in Indian Wells and lost in the quarterfinals in Miami. Clijsters is a two-time runner-up at the French Open and would hold an important part in the draw if she plays the prestigious slam being held at Roland Garros
