US Open Tennis 2009 - - Men's And Women's Doubles Highlights

The men’s and women’s doubles draws were full of action on Monday, with most of the top seeds advancing.

The No. 2 seed in men’s doubles, Daniel Nestor of Canada and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia, got off to a fast start in a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 third-round win over Robert Kendrick of the United States and Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia.

Nestor and Zimonjic, two-time defending Wimbledon champions, set a tone right away with a break in the match’s opening game and sprinted to a 4-0 lead in the first set before dropping a game. Nestor and Zimonjic hit 64 winners to their opponents’ 39. Next up for the pair will be Israel’s Andy Ram and Belarus’ Max Mirnyi in the quarterfinals.

In another men’s third round match, fourth-seeded Lukas Dlouhy of the Czech Republic and Leander Paes of India topped Austrians Jurgen Melzer and Julian Knowle, 6-4, 7-5. Paes and Dlouhy committed 18 unforced errors, but the duo converted three of five break points, which proved to be the difference. Dlouhy and Paes will take on South Africa’s Wesley Moodie and Belgium’s Dick Norman in the quarterfinals.

The No. 3 seed, India’s Mahesh Bhupathi and the Bahamas’ Mark Knowles, advanced in straight sets over Dudi Sela of Israel and Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei. They will meet Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic and France’s Michael Llodra in the quarterfinals.

In the women’s draw, the sixth-seeded Spanish team of Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez advanced with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over American Vania King and Romanian Monica Niculescu. Vives and Martinez Sanchez earned the victory despite getting only 40 percent of their first serves in. They will face American Liezel Huber and Cara Black of Zimbabwe in the quarterfinals.

There was one upset on the women’s side, as the fifth-seeded duo, Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova and Japan’s Ai Sugiyama, fell to the Chinese team of Zi Yan and Jie Zheng, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Yan and Zheng, seeded No. 11, will face the fourth-seeded Williams sisters in the quarterfinals.
