LAHORE, Nov 11 - - Pakistan Cricket Board has appointed stylish batsman Muhammad Yousaf as the captain of the Pakistan team for the test series against New Zealand, giving rest to outgoing crisis ridden captain Younis Khan. “ Yousaf has been appointed captain for the three test series commencing in New Zealand from November 24, said Chairman,PCB,Muhammad Ijaz Butt when contacted on phone by APP in Dubai on Wednesday. He said Younis Khan requested the Board to give him a break from international cricket during the three test series.
Wicketkeeper batsman, Kamran Akmal was named vice captain. Sources in PCB told APP that Younis was under pressure to step down as captain after Pakistan’s loss in recent one day series in Abu Dubai and his bad form was also a reason which forced him to take a break.
“PCB was also under pressure to strip Younis of captaincy after defeat against New Zealand and for his own dismal performance in which he scored 0,19 and 3 runs in as many as ODI’s”, they asserted.
“ Another reason was that most of the senior players were not happy with the handling of Younis and his autocratic attitude which annoyed them and they urged PCB to make a change in captaincy in order to revive the flattering fortune of the team in the test series” , they added.
They said even some of the senior players threatened not to play if Younis was retained captain in the test series.
Younis was appointed captain earlier this year in place of all rounder Shoaib Malik and his resignation was rejected by PCB authorities last month following Pakistan’s semi final loss to New Zealand in Champions Trophy in South Africa.
A number of former test cricketers including Inzamam ul Haq voiced against Younis as captain and even said that he does not deserve a place in the team as a member because of his poor run and lack of abilities to re unite and re group the team and players.
“ PCB Chairman extended his full support to Younis to retain him as captain but things turned bad to worst during the ODI’s at Abu Dhabi and PCB was left with no option but to show exit to Younis on the pretext of a “ break” and to appoint Yousaf as captain to address the worries of the
players ahead of important test series in New Zealand”,they added.
The first test will be played at Dunedin from November 24 28, second at Wellington from December 3 7 and third at Napier from December 11 5.
In his brief media talk, Chief Operating Officer,PCB, Wasim Bari said Younis got fatigued while playing international cricket and requested a break which was granted with mutual understanding between Chairman PCB, selection committee and team management.
“ Younis is a great player but currently under a bad patch and we believe a “rest” will help him to regain lost touch and to start cricket afresh”, he said.
He said the decision to replace Younis in the test series has not yet been taken and selectors will be deciding on this issue soon.
He said Yousaf has potential to deliver as captain being senior most player in the team. “ He was captain in the past and he has the abilities to fit in the role of a leader”,he added.
