Dedication and Love to Cricket - - Alcwyn Jenkins, 72 Died During a Match; As Ball Hit on His Head

Alcwyn Jenkins, 72, was concentrating so hard on a potential run-out that he stepped into the path of a ball thrown at the stumps.

He did not appear to hear warning shouts and was hit on the head.

Widower Mr Jenkins, of Skewen, South Wales, was flown to hospital by air ambulance but died.

The lifelong cricket fan had coached Stephen Davies, the fielder who threw the fatal ball in St Helen's, Swansea.

PC Michael Chislett said the umpire moved to get a better view as batsmen ran a single. He said: "It could have been that he was so professional he would not take his eyes off the stumps."

Coroner Philip Rogers said: "He was doing something that he loved at the time of his sad death." Verdict: Accident.
