Rwanda have made history by qualifying for their first-ever FIFA tournament, booking their place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup by reaching the last four of the CAF U-17 Championship.
A 1-0 victory over Egypt courtesy of Faustin Usingizimana’s decisive goal sealed a semi-final spot, despite Rwanda – who are hosting the continental finals – playing the final 23 minutes with just ten men. The U-17 team’s success in qualifying for July and August’s global showpiece in Mexico is a timely boost for the central African nation, whose senior team slumped to an all-time low position of 134 in today’s FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.
The race to join Rwanda at the FIFA U-17 World Cup remains wide open, with Egypt and Burkina Faso both following behind on three points in Group A, while Congo and Côte d'Ivoire lead the way on the same tally after the first round of matches in Group B.
