MOHALI, India - - West Indies brutally sunk the quarterfinal hopes of giant-killers Ireland here at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali. After been invited to bat first West Indies had a slow but steady in response to some accurate and good bowling by Irish bowlers.
Wes Indies openers, Chanderpaul (35) and Devon Smith (107), provided a solid opening stand of 89 runs. But the real cameo played by Kieron Pollard by scoring 94 runs off 55 balls. West Indies lower-order collapsed once again and just managed to take the score to 275. Kevin O’Brien showed some skill with the bat and picked up 4 wickets; while John Mooney took 2 wickets. Boyd Rankin, Andre Botha and George Dockrell claimed one wicket each.
Chasing 276, Ireland had a shaky start too losing successive wickets with regular intervals. Only once they seemed comfortable and looking to get the target when Ed Joyace (84) and Gary Wilson (61) were partnering against the West Indies bowling in the middle of their innings. But Darren Sammy struck twice to pick up the wickets of Kevin O’Brien (10) and Gary Wilson.
