MADRID, Spain - - Serbian tennis star and world No 2 Novak Djokovic overcame Rafael Nadal on clay for the first time in 10 meetings, beating the top-ranked Spaniard 7-5, 6-4 to win the Madrid Open tennis tournament on Sunday and extended his triumphant start to the season to 32 matches.

Second-ranked Djokovic squandered a 4-0 lead in the first set but recovered to end Nadal's latest winning streak on clay at 37 matches and earn the Serb his third straight victory over Nadal in finals this season. Federer also lost to Djokovic in the finals at Miami and Indian Wells this year.
Nadal had to swallow his first loss on clay in nearly two years, a run of 37 straight victories stretching back to the French Open fourth round in 2009 when he lost to Robin Soderling.
Now Nadal has this week's Rome Masters, Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion's points to defend.
This is Djokovic's 6th title of 2011 that led him to improve on Bjorn Borg's 31-match season-opening run in 1980. He trails only John McEnroe's 42-0 start in 1984.
