Amir Khan v Lamont Petersen -- Referee Joe Cooper's controversial decisions cost Khan pair of junior welterweight titles

WASHINGTON (Dec. 11) – Amir Khan shocked by the loss to Lamont Petersen due to a split decision on Saturday night at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in the presence of a wild, near-sellout crowd of 8,647.

Amir Khan's upset defeat by the hands of Joe Cooper rather than Lamont Petersen
Petersen won the bout to lift a pair of junior welterweight titles in a major upset courtesy to the controversial decision by referee Joe Cooper. Cooper deducted a point from Khan in the 7th round for pushing Petersen and then again in 12th round he removed another in the 12th round for a disputed punch on the break.

Khan had traveled all the way from England to Peterson's hometown and will certainly be sorry now after the controversial treatment in the ring by Cooper.

Judges Valerie Dorsett and George Hill each had it 113-112 for Peterson, and Nelson Vazquez had it 115-110 for Khan. ESPN.com had it 114-111 for Khan, as did HBO's unofficial scorer Harold Lederman, who had it 113-112.

Amir Khan has already challenged the outcome and demanded a rematch on a neutral venue.
