A century on debut by teenager Umar Akmal has rescued Pakistan in the first cricket test against New Zealand in Dunedin, with the visitors 307 for eight at stumps on day three.

That's in reply to New Zealand's first innings of 429 an overall lead of 122 for the Black Caps.

Umar Akmal and his brother, Kamran, put on 176 for the sixth wicket after coming together when Pakistan was reeling at 85 fo five.

Umar was finally dismissed for 129 while Kamran made 82.

Shane Bond has been the most successful of the New Zealand bowlers taking four for 93.

Chris Martin and Dan Vettori both picked up two wickets each.
