2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa - - South African President Jacob Zuma Assures The Tight Security Measures for the Event in June 2010

Johannesburg (South Africa) South African President Jacob Zuma, who is on a state visit to London, has assured the world that his country’s stringent safety and security measures for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in June included the deployment of over 40,000 police officers to keep the peace during the games.

He was speaking during celebrations to mark 100 days to the 11 June kickoff held in central London Tuesday night.

According to an SABC report monitored here, attending the celebrations were South African expatriates in the UK, members of the diplomatic corps and the business community.

Zuma also used the opportunity to announce a special dispensation for the estimated 450,000 ticket holders attending the games.

"Visas will be issued to nationals traveling from non-visa exempt countries, who are able to provide proof of purchase of a FIFA match ticket. We will not compromise on security, as applicants will still have to comply with the normal visa requirements," he said.

Zuma also assured the safety of the participating 32 nations and their travelling fans. In addition, participating teams will also provide their own specially trained police officers, he said.

"We will provide route security, state of the art information and communications technology for security, as well as courts that will be in operation 24 hours a day to ensure quick access to justice," Zuma added.

Zuma also unveiled South Africa’s new international marketing logo. He says the logo takes its guidance from the national flag and symbolises the spirit of ubuntu (African hospitality) and resilience.
