Hockey World Cup 2010 - - England Vs. Pakistan: Pakistan's Semi-Final Hopes Wilted as England Continue to Show Superb Performance in the Tournament

In a very crucial must-win game against England; Pakistani hockey team failed to make an impact in the first half of the match.

European champion England totally controlled the game and they were looking very very composed in their efforts to attack the Pakistani pole. Pakistani goal keeper Salman Akbar exhibited an impressive show by saving few shots of English players; but could not stop Jonty Clarke and Ashley Jackson in 21st and 31st minutes, respectively, of the first half. Both of them shared a goal each against Pakistan. The first one by Jonty Clarke might easily be said one of the best goals of the tournament.

Pakistan got two penalty corners in first half but could not be converted into goals. England also wasted one penalty corner; but their field efforts earned two goals for them.

In the first five minutes of second half Pakistan tried to exert pressure on England and in the course wasted another penalty corner; but England goal keeper was Fair enough to negate the Pakistani players' efforts.


At last Shakeel Abbasi on the pass of Akhtar Ali decreased the English lead in the 45th minute of the game. A beautiful combined effort earned first goal for Pakistan. Only after three minutes Pakistan got a penalty corner that was converted into second goal for Pakistan; by Rehan Butt but England team opted to go for a referral and after quite a some time the review umpire confirmed the goal. In the process English defender injured and taken out of the game. At last at 48th minute of the match Pakistan leveled the match again on 2-2.

English captain Barry Middleton scored his first goal of the tournament in 53rd minute and again got the lead of one goal. English forward Tindall got a very good chance to double the lead in 57th minute but his try was well outside the pole.

Impressive team efforts brought Jonty Clarke's second goal in the 62nd minute doubled the English lead and wilted the hopes of Pakistan to reach in the semi's of big event.

Jonty Clarke and Barry Middleton were again involved in the 5th goal for England in 65th minute of the match. Great out-of-the-D pass from Clarke was converted into a goal by captain Middleton. Abdul Haseem got a chance in 67th minute but could not contact properly to steal a goal for Pakistan. Again with one minute reaming Abdul Haseem's back flip gone over the pole. After gone down the lead of three goals Pakistani efforts were all scattered and could not threat English defence.

The final scoreline remained 5-2 in England's favour.
