The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is claiming the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Champions League (CL) as their domestic tournaments but interestingly the scorecards and records of the first IPL didn't figure in the last year's statistical annual and the second edition of the IPL, which was played in South Africa earlier this year will not figure in the record books either.
This is due to the fact that the BCCI has not published their statistical annual this year (as against the regular practice of publishing in September every year during BCCI AGM) and may now stop this tradition for ever and this is for the first time since 1974-75, the BCCI statistical Annual has not been published.
The BCCI is "considering" to make CDs' from now onwards rather than publishing the Annuals every year. Despite repeated attempts, the editors Sudhir Vaidya and Dinar Gupte were not available for comments but when Prof. Ratnakar Shetty, the COO approached, he insisted, "the IPL and CL are BCCI's domestic tournaments and every efforts will be made to preserve records".
The ongoing CL, in which many foreign teams and players are participating, is also being co-hosted by Cricket Australia (CA) and Cricket South Africa (CSA). "We are the major partners and it is OUR domestic tournament", Shetty said.
"The matches are regarded by ICC as having the status of list A T20 matches", David Richardson, the ICC General Manager (Cricket) said.
Interestingly, the IPL and CL matches will find mention in the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, the Bible of the game. "The matches played in the IPL, whether in India or South Africa, as well as the ongoing Champions League, are all considered "List A Twenty20" games - in other words, the T20 equivalent of a first-class game", the Almanack editorial team said from London. "Wisden carries a small, but growing section of records devoted to List A Twenty20 cricket, and all games played in the IPL and Champions League are eligible to contribute to this section.”
