Asian Games 2010 Guangzhou, China - - Opening Ceremony is Promised to be The Extravagant and Unforgettable

Asian Games organizers are committed to show off an extravagant and unforgettable opening ceremony to launch the 16th Asian Games on Friday evening, hoping to rival the 2008 Olympic display in Beijing.

The ceremony, showcasing the Southern Chinese culture and the water-theme, will integrate the cultures of China and Asia. Officials said Thursday a flotilla of boats will carry the almost 10,000 athletes down the Pearl River to the center of China's third largest city, Guangzhou. In a departure from tradition, the ceremony will be held on an island in mid-river rather than a stadium.

He Jiqing, an Organizer, didn’t reveal some of the details, including how the torch will be lit. But he said the opening ceremony will feature 6,000 performers and draw on conventional southern Chinese culture. He promised the torch-lighting will be "full of Chinese characteristics" and "definitely bring us an unexpected surprise."

The Asian Games are the world's second largest sporting event, exceeded only by the Olympics. Athletes from 45 countries will be competing for a total of 476 gold medals, with host China favourite to top the medal table.
