England, aiming to win an Ashes series in Australia for the first time in 24 years, is going to pile up an unquestionable lead before having another attack at the hosts with a ball.
At the time of writing these lines England’s total score is 534/4 and were leading by 289 runs. Kevin Pietersen has completed his double century and batting on 200; while supported by Ian Bell who is batting on 37.
On the third day of second test England started their innings from 317/2 with a lead of 72 runs. Australia took the wicket of England opener Alastair Cook for 148 at a cost of just 34 runs more but in the process, Kevin Pietersen touched a milestone with his 14th test century to continue the runs spree on the third morning of the second Ashes Test on Sunday.
Kevin Pietersen, supported by Paul Collingwood (40), had reached 158 not out at lunch to help England to 449/3, a lead of 204 over Australia's first innings total of 245.
Left-hander Cook nicked an inside edge to Brad Haddin off the bowling of local quick Ryan Harris to bring an end to 17 1/2 hours of unbeaten batting against the Australians since he was dismissed in the first innings of the first Test.
Alastair Cook scored 235 not out in his second innings in Brisbane to help England rescue a draw and drove the tourists into a strong position in the second Test with another century on Saturday.
In three innings over both Tests, the 25-year-old scored 450 runs off 865 balls over 22 1/2 hours.
The 25-year-old shared a partnership of 175 with Pietersen, who earlier roared and punched the air in delight as he secured his 14th Test century - his first since March last year - with a single off Harris.
Pietersen, dropped by England earlier this year for some limited overs matches, had a minor scare when he was on 91 and Australia requested a television review of a refused lbw appeal.
The 30-year-old stood his ground confidently as the television pictures showed Harris's delivery had hit his pad outside the line of the wickets.
Harris was the pick of the Australian bowlers, who continued to labour on a flat wicket with only the hint of rain in the air offering any prospect of respite.
Pietersen scored 158 and Collingwood 206 at the Adelaide Oval on the last Ashes tour in 2006-07.
The tourists declared their first innings on 551 in the corresponding Test four years ago but still conspired to lose by six wickets.
