Luke Fairweather: South African Local Cricket Official - - Shot Dead Outside the Sahara Park Newlands on Thursday

The fourth day of the Third Test between India and South Africa at Sahara Park Newlands on Thursday ended in tragedy when a local cricket official was shot dead outside the ground.

The man, Luke Fairweather, had been a youth team manager for the provincial cricket association and was also an official of the Alma Marist CC.

He had been at the ground as a guest in the President Suite.

The details surrounding his shooting remained unclear at this stage but it has been reported that he had had an altercation with a traffic official.

This is believed to have turned violent and at least one gun was drawn.

The flags at Newlands will be flown at half mast today as a mark of respect for Fairweather’s passing.

The police are still investigating the matter and have not commented at this stage.

Prof Andre Odendaal chief executive of the Western Province Cricket Association said : "The condolences of the Association go out to Luke Fairweather’s family and loved ones and flags at the stadium will be flown at half-mast in his memory during the final day’s play on Thursday”.

Fairweather, 49, played just 2 games for Western Province as a right-hand batsman.
