After another top order crumple on the day 1 of the critical third Test at the WACA in Perth on Thursday Australia faces an uphill task to get back the Ashes pride.
England's opening pair scored safely to 29-0 at stumps of the first day’s play, with Alastair Cook on 17 and Andrew Strauss on 12, leaving the tourists well-placed to build a strong first innings lead with a support of their earlier good bowling and sparkling fielding.
Earlier England won a vital toss and forced the Aussies to 69-5 after inviting them in to bat on a greenish pitch, before Australia's tail-enders managed to take them to a moderately spirited total of 268.
Experienced Mike Hussey again led the retaliation with 61, supported by Brad Haddin (53), Mitchell Johnson (62) and Peter Siddle (35 not out) to put something on the board to bowl on. Top-order collapse was as miserable as opener Phil Hughes (2), struggling skipper Ricky Ponting (12), nervous Michael Clarke (4) and new No.6 Steven Smith (7).
England already leading the five-Test series 1-0 after their second Test victory by an innings in Adelaide and most-likely triumph in Perth will guarantee they retain the Ashes, after shocking Australia in England last year.
The pick of the day was the killing instincts of the tourists’ bowling attack led by Chris Tremlett, recalled pace bowler, claimed 3-63 including wickets of Phil Hughes, vice captain Michael Clarke and Steven Smith. James Anderson also continued superb bowling and he also claimed three wickets while Steven Finn and Graeme Swann got two wickets each.

Australia bowled 16 overs before stumps at first day and the Mitchell Johnson teased English batsmen the most with his accurate line and length with crushing speed.
