Fourth ODI of the ongoing New Zealand tour at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore was Gautam Gambhir’s 100th ODI. India repeatedly won the toss and decided to field first thereby inviting New Zealand to bat first. India has already grabbed the series by winning the first three ODIs.
New Zealand made two changes to their last match team whereas India made three. New Zealand batsmen did their best for the first time in this series. Except Jamie How and Kyle Mills everyone contributed in building New Zealand innings of 315 runs. Special to mention is James Franklin who changed the equation of all Indian bowlers and it was only him that enabled New Zealand to cross 300 mark. Second last over from Zaheer fetched 8 runs but last over from Nehra fetched 22 runs.
Franklin made 98 runs in only 69 balls with 12 fours and 3 sixes. Scott Styris and Brandon McCullum had one six each in their account. Nehra has created a world record of giving more than 70 runs in an ODI nine times.
India starting with an uphill task of 316 runs to win, started slowly but recovered soon to cross 6 runs per over when Gambhir got out at 27 and in the same over from McKay last match hero Virat Kohli also gifted his wicket without opening his account. If Kohli had made 7 runs in this match he would have completed his 1000 runs in 2010. Yuvraj too got out early at his score of 20 runs with 1 four and 1 six.
Parthiv Patel who came as opener with Gambhir played an admirable innings of 53 runs which his ODI career best score too made in 57 balls. India by now was 108 for four in 20th over and very few hopes were left India winning the match.
Rohit Sharma got out at his score of 44 in 48 balls with 4 fours and 1 six and India further reduced to 188 for five wickets in 34th over. 18 overs were left and India had to make 128 runs with more than 7 runs per over and only Yusuf Pathan and Saurabh Tiwary left as batsmen. Both of them had come after a long gap in the team.
If Franklin had a miraculous innings for New Zealand, India had Yusuf Pathan to repeat the same for his team. It was Yusuf alone who not only brought India back in the game but took it back safely and smartly from the hands of New Zealand.
India won the match with 1 over and 1 ball to spare. Last fifty for India innings came in just 31 balls. Yusuf Pathan made 123 runs in 96 balls with 7 fours and 7 sixes. Saurabh Tiwary assisted Pathan well by staying with him on the crease making 37 of 39 balls with 3 fours and 1 six. Tiwary closed the match with a six.
Most popular player award was given to Yusuf Pathan.
India is 4-0 in this five ODI series with only the last ODI left to be played. In the match total of 636 runs were made in 98.5 overs.
