Hockey World Cup 2010 - - New Zealand Vs. Argentina: New Zealanders Stunned by The Surprised Victory of Argentina


In an important match of Pool A; Argentina and New Zealand faced each other today at Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium Dehli on the day 8 of the Hero Honda FIH Hockey World Cup 2010.

The match was more important for New Zealand to stay in contention to qualify for the Semi-finals of the big event. On the other hand Argentina was still in the hunt for the first point in the tournament. As Argentinian Team had nothing to lose; therefore, they played aggressively from the start of the match. They got the chances but their inexperience on the international arena became evident from their unsuccessful finishes. New Zealand team were playing under pressure as they need this victory to enhance their chances to find the place in final four teams.

Argentina, ranked 14 in the world, played their hearts out to negate the efforts of Kiwis; especially Argentinian goal keeper, Espinosa, exhibited great class and stood Hero Honda man of the match for his superb performance. In 32nd minute of the first half New Zeland got a penalty corner that was stopped brilliantly by Espinosa; but unfortunately one of the defender couldn't save his foot from the ball and New Zealand were awarded by Penalty Stroke. Argentinian goal keeper, Espinosa, judged the ball with perfection and stopped it diving toward his right. The hit was very low and fast; but Espinosa done it for his team.

At the end of first half both teams failed to score a goal; but morally Argentina succeeded to get an edge over more experienced New Zeland.

In the second half New Zeland team was looking more composed and committed to score their first goal in the match; but every good effort ended up with the brilliance of Argentinian goal keeper Espinosa. Argentinian defender Brunet supported their goal keeper with his class and negated many efforts of the New Zealand forwards on his own. Argentina played defensively most of the second half; but they fancied their own chances time to time. As a result of one of their combined movement Facundo Callioni scored the only goal of the match in the 56th minute.



New Zealanders registered their protest to the match referee Blasch; but they didn't opted to review the decision and scoreline became 1-0 in Argentina favour. New Zealand got enough 14-15 minutes to level the score and go for a much needed victory; but Argentinian defence proved to be more than strong and they succeeded to steal their first point of the world cup 2010. The final scoreline remained 1-0 in Argentina favour.
